Critical games studies interview

- What was the last fiction book I read?

The last book fiction book I read was "Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire" when I was about 12 years old. As you can tell I don't read that much, and if you asked why I would say it's because I’m too cool for that s***. Although there are probably good books out there to read.

- What was the last non-fiction book I read?

Well if you class me reading about 12 lines of "Clarkson’s World" as the last non-fiction book I read then I would say that. If not then the answer would be none :).

-What was the last live performance you saw?

Don't really have a name for it but I saw a bunch of Turkish dancers and singers in guess guess, Turkey. They were pretty good, especially the dancers, they were crazy, one of them span on their head for about a minute which doesn't sound long but think about it, that’s insane.

-What was the last film you saw?

Iron man 2 I believe, which didn't have as much action in as I was hoping for but it was alright, better than the first one.

-Which news paper do you read?

I don't........I watch the news if I want the news :) because I’m lazy like that.

-What was the last art gallery you visited?

Not my choice, trust me, it was a carpet gallery..................nothing more to say really, walls and walls with carpets on them, this was in Turkey.

-How often do you play video games?

Never!!!! They make me sick! I'm only joking about 14 hours I would say a week.

-How often do you play non video games?

That’s annoying because I could go a week not playing any and then the next week playing poker for about 6 hours or so. So I’m going to say between 0 and 6 hours a week.

  2. I would've thought you'd've included things like technical books as non-fiction (books on Flash, HTML, CSS, etc.) It would be interesting to get people to do the same interview again toward the end of the second semester and to compare the two!

  3. Just looked at a key stage one maths game, and "reviewed" it. The game mechanics were very basic, little interaction with the game, with no feedback on correct or incorrect answers. This results im no real gain of education as the kids just can guess what they think the answer is. Only one goal to achieve, this was building a robot by answering the question right. Very little struggle with no way yo lose the game, the only struggle is that if you answer a question wrong it will take longer to complete the game. The structure is also basic with no real rules has you can only select the difefrent answers, so you can't actually break any rules. the game doesn't really have endogenous meaning, a sure the fals elements are only important within the game but learning of the shapes are important in the real world as well a sthe shapes.

Final thoughts is the game is lacking a lot of core meachanics it should of had. Simply by adding feedback on why a answer is correct or incorrect will massivly increase the educational vaule of the game. And adding in a point system would add to the struggle, structure and goals of the game.

Just another note i wouild like to make, teh article we read told us what we needed to make a complete game which functions well, however not a good game, as the word "fun" or "enjoyable" wasn't really used. If a game isn't fun and enjoyable then surelt this is not a good game, and teher are no guide lines on how to do that, it's up to us as designers to make a fun game to play.

  5. Hi

the entry needs a bit of spell checking. i agree on the whole, with what you say. There may well be some guidelines to help us make games more fun and we shall be consulting them in due course, unless you want to read ahead - in which case you will get their sooner.
